The short definition
Paint correction is machine polishing that removes an extremely thin layer of clear coat in order to level out the defects sitting in it. As those defects are reduced, light reflects more evenly and the paint looks clearer and glossier.
Defects it addresses
- Swirl marks from automatic car washes and improper drying
- Light scratches contained in the clear coat
- Oxidation and dull, faded paint from UV exposure
- Water spot etching from sprinklers and hard water
What it cannot do
Clear coat is finite. Scratches deep enough to catch a fingernail, chips down to primer, and damage below the clear coat cannot be polished away. A detailer promising to remove every scratch is not being straight with you.
Correction before coating
Because a ceramic coating preserves whatever is beneath it, correction is normally done first. Read more about paint correction in Orem and about ceramic coating and how the two work together.
